Chambers clerk loses court battle

A former 2 Paper Buildings (Desmond de Silva QC) clerk has lost an industrial tribunal claim worth around £20,000 after being linked to five chambers defections.

Junior clerk Steven Ball brought his unfair dismissal claim against Desmond de Silva QC’s set after he was suspended on 31 January. Ball alleged unfair dismissal but the case was dismissed this month after a two-day hearing. The reasons for the judgment are not yet available and it is not known whether Ball will appeal.

2 Paper Buildings was represented by solicitors Wright Son & Pepper and counsel Gary Herbert of Ely Place Chambers. Steven Ball was represented by Royds Treadwell and counsel Ben Jaffey at Blackstone Chambers.

It is understood that part of the evidence submitted in the case linked Ball to five defections that occurred at 2 Paper Buildings in February. Michel Massih QC led the defections.

The written judgment is expected to be delivered in the next six weeks.

Neither Ball nor 2 Paper Buildings were available for comment.
