Southwood v West Lambeth Health Authority – QBD 3 July 1995

Accident: Plaintiff born with Smith Lemli Opitz Syndrome leaving him mentally retarded and with cleft palate, webbed toes, an umbilical hernia and appearance of Downs syndrome child. Condition undiagnosed until 1978 when sister born with same disorder – underwent surgery on cleft palate at St Thomas's Hospital, Lambeth – airway became blocked resulting in oxygen starvation

Injuries: Spastic quadriplegia, wheelchair-bound, can't speak

Award: Agreed damages of £1.175 million
