Former SJ Berwin partner Charlotte McMillan has joined Virgin Media in the newly created role of assistant general counsel.
McMillan was one of four SJ Berwin partners to leave the firm earlier this year after it decided to close its media practice. The closure was made after it was decided that film finance was no longer a core part of the firm’s practice.
At Virgin Media McMillan will report to general counsel Bryan Hall and will establish a team of around four lawyers to focus on TV content carriage.
Hall said McMillan had been hired for the job because she has “very good industry experience”.
He added: “She’s got the right mix of polish and hard-nosed negotiator,” he said.
While in private practice McMillan focused on the commercial, copyright and regulatory aspects of broadcasting and digital media. Her clients included CBS Paramount International Television, CBS Broadcasting, Pipex Communications, Ingenious and Life TV.
Virgin Media’s legal department is made up of 65 people, although not all are qualified lawyers.
