A woman who gave birth to a baby after her boyfriend had a vasectomy is suing the doctor who carried out the operation. Helen Cannon, 32, of Stevenage, Hertfordshire, has issued a writ claiming damages from GP Dr Michael Duggan, also of Stevenage. The writ says she and her long-term boyfriend, Peter Townsend, visited Duggan in November 1990 and on 8 December 1990 he performed the operation on Townsend. Townsend visited the doctor for tests on his semen and some time after the couple stopped using any form of contraception. However, in January 1993 Cannon discovered she was pregnant and on 20 August 1993 gave birth to a daughter, Ivana. The writ accuses Duggan of acting unskillfully and negligently in advising, counselling and treating the couple in relation to the vasectomy.
