What was your first-ever job?
Packing Christmas hampers at Harrods – I was sacked for chucking a Christmas pudding at a colleague.

What was your worst experience as a trainee?
Being told in my first seat appraisal that I had no chance of qualifying at Rowe & Maw and I had a spiv-like appearance.

Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?
My partner Sally Davies’s office – she has access to all the gossip and seems to know about most things before they’ve even happened.

What time do you usually leave the office?
Usually between 6pm and 7pm. I am constantly ridiculed by my colleagues who call me a workshy shirker, but they are all still asleep when I arrive in the office well before 7am every morning.

What do you do at weekends?
Remind the family who I am, and ferry kids around various school/club matches and sporting events and watch Spurs lose.

What’s your favourite restaurant?
The Star, Great Dunmow.

If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?
Sports journalist.

Who’s your hero and why?
Ian Botham. He never knew when he was beaten and played with a passion for his country that puts many modern day stars to shame.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Free entry to various top sporting events and restaurants.

What’s the toughest thing about your job?
The relentless and never-ending quest for the next instruction.

What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it?
Falling out with my best friend, who is now general counsel at one of the largest oil companies in the world.

What car do you drive?
My wife’s Mini Cooper.

What book are you currently reading?
My Manchester United Years: The Autobiography by Bobby Charlton.

What’s on your iPod?
Oasis, Snow Patrol, Scissor Sisters, James Blunt, Jim Morrison, and some 1980s classics such as Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, and of course The Smiths.

Favourite children’s book?
World Wrestling Federation 2007 Annual, with 3D specs.

What’s the most exciting deal or case you’ve worked on and why?
The Panama Canal expansion programme – it feels like we’re part of history in the making, and in construction terms I’m not sure there is a project that could be more high-profile and challenging.

If you were stranded on a desert island what two luxury items would you take?
My wife and a DVD of Botham’s Ashes.

What’s the worst partner conference location you’ve attended and why?
London – no air miles.

What’s the longest you’ve worked without sleep?
We don’t ‘work’ through the night in construction but we have occasionally been known to party hard with our clients (which is of course ‘work’), so the longest would have been about 23.5 hours.

Which actor would play you in the movie of your life and why?
Eric Cantona – he’s an all-round team player.

Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with and why?
Arsene Wenger – he’s doing his best to destroy English football.
