ITV’s managing editor and director of compliance Ian McBride is to retire in June after more than 30 years with Granada and ITV.
His legal responsibilities will be taken over by Andy Griffiths in the new role of group director of legal and regulatory compliance.
Griffiths was previously ITV head of legal affairs, running the company’s central legal function. He said: “At a time when trust in the media is in the spotlight, I am excited to take up this new challenge.”
ITV group legal director Andrew Garard said: “Andy already knows ITV inside out and will be a tremendous asset in leading the compliance team forward.”
Before joining ITV, Griffiths had been vice president of Prisma Sports and Media and a media lawyer at Lovells.
McBride, a former journalist, made his name as deputy editor and director of World In Action. He led Granada’s six-year campaign for the release of the Birmingham Six and World In Action’s efforts to uncover the truth when politician Jonathan Aitken sued Granada and The Guardian for libel.
He said: “Mine’s a charmed life – every day for 30 years I’ve worked with some of the most gifted and committed people in broadcasting.”
