Eversheds has landed leading retailer Iceland as a client for its fledgling liability claims group.
The practice won the client after being invited to pitch against a range of other, non-legal companies as well as law firms.
Eversheds first started handling claims work 18 months ago, concentrating on employer’s liability, public liability and motor vehicle personal injury claims.
But it was only in May this year that a formal practice group was set up after the purchase of claims investigator Liability Risk Services.
Although Eversheds has done some piecemeal work for Iceland before, this is the first time it has been retained on a full-time basis.
Last year the retailer spent £250,000 on external legal advice, although no figures are available for the amount spent on liability claims.
But John Moseley, Eversheds partner and chairman of the claims management group, confirms Iceland is an important win for the firm because of the volume of liability work public companies such as retailers generate.
He adds: “All clients are valuable but Iceland is a very good one to get because it is such a high profile retailer.”
Eversheds was invited to pitch for the work earlier this year after fellow client Sainsbury’s recommended the Cardiff-based department to Iceland.
The firm charges fixed fees for the cradle-to-grave service offered by its liability unit. This includes initial investigations through to litigation where necessary.
But as well as standard charge-out rates, the group will also charge Iceland a bonus if it reduces the amount of time involved in handling claims or its overall liability costs.
Moseley says: “A lot of these people have hundreds of thousands of claims a year and the financial impact of that is amazing.”
