The UK’s richest lawyer, Andrew Nulty of Warrington firm Avalon Solicitors, was yesterday (26 October) let off charges of actual bodily harm by a local magistrates’ court.
As first revealed by The Lawyer (4 September) Nulty and his brother Martin appeared before St Helens Magistrates Court in late August charged with assaulting a police officer.
The pair were remanded on unconditional bail until a plea hearing, originally scheduled to take place on 12 October.
However the hearing was postponed until this week, when the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped the case due to lack of evidence.
Nulty took home profits of £13m from the last financial year, the lion’s share of Avalon’s total £15.5m profit. Managing partner Anthony Chorlton made £2.5m, in itself a higher profit share than any lawyer in the City.
Avalon is under investigation by the Law Society for its role in the miners’ compensation scheme, and Nulty is set to appear before a disciplinary tribunal accused of several breaches of solicitors’ practice and accounting rules. There is no date yet set for the tribunal hearing.
