In brief: Judges retire gracefully

Lord Justice Mann has retired as a Lord Justice of Appeal effective 10 January. He became a Lord Justice of Appeal in 1988. Judge Bates QC has retired from the Circuit Bench on the Western Circuit. He became a Circuit Judge in 1989, having sat as a Recorder since 1981. QC Maurice Kay, who took silk and was appointed a recorder in 1988, has been appointed a Justice of the High Court, assigned to the Queen's Bench Division. West Yorkshire solicitor Christopher Darnton has been appointed a provincial stipendiary magistrate for the Greater Manchester Commission Area, to be based at Salford Magistrates' Court. He was a partner with Wakefield firm Lister Croft Harrow Darnton.
