The secret of Berwin Leighton Paisner’s (BLP) staggering profitability rise was revealed last Wednesday night. Down in West London, a posse of partners had kindly entertained a rather thrilled team from The Lawyer by taking them to Madonna’s Earls Court extravaganza. At the after-show party (BLP’s, not Madge’s) down at the Blue Elephant, head of corporate John Bennett then entertained the gathered hordes with a visual demonstration of what really makes BLP tick. The energised firm and the subsequent boost in cash has nothing to do with chasing WIP or debtors, or even the blessed FRS5, it transpired. It’s all down to fitness. Perhaps it’s thanks to an exercise regime instigated by firm boss Neville Eisenhower (sorry, Tulkinghorn is still a little tender), or perhaps Bennett is simply supremely fit. Whatever the truth, prompted by seeing a member of The Lawyer doing a Madge and showing off her yogic crab on the restaurant floor, the M&A man dropped and gave the watching crowd 50 press-ups. Into the groove indeed.
