Rugby row set for kick-off

A challenge over the decision of those responsible for administration of first division rugby to reduce the number of first division clubs from 14 to 12 is to be heard in the High Court on 26 August. The challenge has been mounted by Rotherham Rugby Union FC and the managers of second division rugby. Rotherham and the second division administrators argue that by reducing the number of clubs the first division has breached a 1988 agreement which stipulated the figure should be maintained at 14 unless varied by mutual agreement on at least 12 months notice. Rotherham, which are at the top of the second division, say the resolution blocked their promotion and that they have suffered loss and damages as a result.
