Nearly three-quarters of respondents to a Law Society survey have said there are problems with employee retention and engagement within the legal sector.
The survey has also found that top law firms “may have to change their attitudes” towards different working patterns and offer new types of benefits.
The study was based on the premise that the legal sector is engaged in a “war for talent”, and firms must compete with each other to retain and recruit the most talented individuals.
Fifty nine per cent of employees surveyed felt that there are not enough opportunities for career progression in their firm. Another 67 per cent said that the opportunities for career progression are not made clear.
Conversely, employers feel the factor that is most effective for retaining staff is the opportunity for career progression. This is followed closely by more flexible working arrangements and “the ability to participate in firm decision-making”.
