Wragge & Co to make 30 lay-offs” />Wragge & Co has launched a consultation to identify 30 redundancies across its Birmingham and London offices.
The Birmingham-based law firm is in talks with fee-earners across all of its departments, however the majority of them are in the real estate group, which accounts for a third of firm turnover.
Senior partner Quentin Poole told The Lawyer: “This process will not affect support staff. Lawyers’ life-blood is being busy – we cannot allow a situation with too many people for the amount of work you’ve got.
“It has not been an easy decision, but market conditions have led to a decrease in activity, particularly in real estate. We have to keep the size and shape of the firm under review.”
The 30-day consultation, which is being carried out by employee consultation group People First, is the first that the firm has ever undertaken.
Poole added that “that logic does not apply to secretaries and support staff” and that no redundancies would be made among support staff.
“We think that we’ve got 20 secretaries too many but they are very flexible and we would rather they left through natural wastage than through redundancies,” he said.
