Making a mark
Last week was momentous. Forget the assassination of JFK and the lunar landings, your grandchildren will be asking you where you were when you heard that Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom passed the 2,000 lawyer mark.
Skadden partner Robert Sheehan sent this email out marking the occasion, which appeared on the Above the Law news site (www.abovethelaw.com): “Congratulations to all of us, past and present, for helping to make Skadden Arps the success that we have become. Special thanks go to Messrs Skadden, Arps and Slate for their decision to form the firm on 1 April 1948 and for the decision to hire Joe Flom as their first associate later that year.”
Reaching 2,000 lawyers is quite an achievement, but there’s no need to put them all in the firm’s name.
Dark and diffident
If you are an associate and not feeling too chipper these days, even with winter drawing in you’re still likely to be about 10 times more cheery than New York blogger Disassociate (http://www.disassociate.net/).
His most recent post says simply: “If you are planning to attend the firm’s Halloween party this year, make yourself look happy. I bet no one will recognize you.”
The dark humour sets the tone for much of the blog, including the author’s description of himself: “I enjoy: Billing in tenths of an hour, eating at my desk late at night, applying first aid to paper cuts, laughing spontaneously at meetings, playing the kazoo, juggling in court.”
Lowering the bar
Getting your call up to the bar is never easy, and Bar or Bust (http://barorbust. blogspot.com/) follows the trials of the tortuous process. But it seems we found out about the blog just as it is winding down. The blogger has applied to Linklaters.
“Now yes it would be very good work experience, and it is fairly nicely renumerated, but am I betraying my quest?” asks Bar or Bust.
