Sydney-based Gilbert & Tobin has poached Bird & Bird’s Hong-Kong based Asia corporate group head Julian Courtney-Stubbs and has launched an assault on its local rivals to bring in four more partners.

The appointments bring its partner headcount to 47. Courtney-Stubbs, who is to join the firm by the end of the year, will become a partner in the firm’s corporate, communications and technology practice in Sydney.

Patent litigators Anthony Muratore and Lisa Taliadoros have joined the firm’s IP and litigation team from Freehills. Property specialists Diane Skapinker and Christine Burke have joined the corporate team from Minter Ellison.

“The arrivals will allow us to expand our service to new areas of IP – particularly life sciences and healthcare,” said Gilbert & Tobin managing partner Danny Gilbert.

The hires of Muratore and Taliadoros were to address what the firm had referred to as a deficit in the firm’s 20-lawyer IP practice while the appointments of Skapinker and Burke are to fortify the firm’s corporate practice.
