What was your first ever job?

As a temporary completions clerk during the summer vacation from university at Leeds Permanent Building Society. They were not impressed with me because I was too meticulous.

What was your worst experience as a trainee?
Within five minutes of starting the job, I dropped a phone and smashed it.

Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?
The car park – far too many people smoke at the office.

What’s your favourite restaurant?
Bellini’s Restaurant, Otley Road, Leeds (they are clients).

If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you have been?
A corporate financier.

Who was your mentor or role model?
Colin Frazer. He was my principal and then my partner and is now a consultant. He is very calm, has an analytical mind and is a brilliant draughtsman.

What’s the best thing about your job?
The people I work with.

What’s the toughest thing about your job?
Persuading clients to pay bills.

What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it?
I don’t think there has been a mistake yet – even though I’m not Mr Wonderful.

What car do you drive?
A Bentley Brooklands.

What book are you currently reading?
The latest Sharpe novel – great escapist reading.

What is on your CD player at the moment?
Frank Sinatra’s The Main Event.

What’s your favourite children’s book?
From an early age my main reading materials were company annual reports. What a load of rubbish. Actually, I like Biggles books.
