Piper Rudnick wins some and loses some in real estate drive

Piper Rudnick has bolstered its rapidly expanding California practice by adding two high profile real estate partners to its San Francisco office.

Stephen Cowan, the former managing partner of O’Melveny & Myers’ San Francisco office, and Caryl Welborn, the former senior partner at Morrison & Foerster joined Piper Rudnick last week. They were joined by O’Melveny senior associate Robert Wachter.

However, Cowan and Welborn’s appointment follows the departure of five real estate lawyers from Piper Rudnick’s Chicago office in January.

James Mayer and Bruce Loring joined Holland & Knight’s Chicago office as partners and Mark Nora, Carol Laude Pechi and Daniel Acosta joined as senior counsel.

Meanwhile, also in January, Piper Rudnick raided Pillsbury Winthrop’s Los Angeles office for a team of five real estate partners.
