Law Society to answer back to Clementi reforms

The Law Society will attempt to provide a cohesive response to Sir David Clementi’s proposal to overhaul regulation of the legal profession in two specially convened meetings.

The Law Society’s ruling council is due to meet on April 22 and May 13 to determine its reaction to Sir David’s consultation paper, released in advance of his decision on changes to the legal services market in June.

The wide-sweeping review has put the Law Society’s dual role as trade union and regulator of the legal profession under threat.

In his consultation paper, released at the beginning of this month, Sir David set out proposals for potential new models for the regulation of legal services, including the Legal Services Authority, a legal equivalent of the Financial Services Authority, and a Legal Services Board to supervise the existing regulators.
