Lord Goodhart QC has been elected the chair of the council of Justice, a human rights organisation.
He follows in the footsteps of Lord Steyn, who chaired the council for two years after he stood down as a Law Lord in 2005.
Goodhart joined the council in 1972 and previously held the position of vice-chair, along with Lord Kingsland QC and Baronness Kennedy QC.
He also headed 3 New Square Chambers before its closure in 2002.
Goodhart said: “I am honoured to have been elected to the chair of the council of Justice. In its 50 years Justice has done an enormous amount to strengthen the rule of law and human rights. We now look forward to our second half-century, in which our voice will be needed at least as much as in the past.”
