Blake Lapthorn Linnell has delivered a blow to Cambridge firm Taylor Vinters, securing its head of technology Simon Smith.
One of the most high-profile technology and IP lawyers in East Anglia, Smith specialises in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and telecoms. Last year his work included advising BioWisdom on its IP strategies.
Taylor Vinters has restructured the department following his departure, appointing Quentin Goldin as head of the new commercial and technology group.
Southampton-based Blake Lapthorn first acquired capability in East Anglia when it merged with 22-partner Oxford firm Linnells in 2003.
The intervening period has seen the firm complete a shake-up of its practice groups and the introduction of a sector-focused strategy to its business. Under the charge of managing partner Walter Cha, the firm last year spun off a Fareham-based children and education group.
Blake Lapthorn last year posted a turnover of £30.5m.
Christine Berry, managing partner at Taylor Vinters, said: “It’s always sad when a specialist leaves, but we have more specialists proportionally than any other firm in the country.”
