Leading Scottish firm, McGrigor Donald has appointed Kirk Murdoch as its managing partner.

Murdoch, who will assume the role in August, has been a partner with the firm since 1982, and is the firm's current head of property. The property practice makes up more than one third of the firm's workload, just behind company and ahead of litigation, which accounts for just over a quarter.

The outgoing managing partner Niall Scott, a litigation lawyer, said it was the firm's policy to appoint a managing partner for three years and that he had simply come to the end of his tenure.

“There was overwhelming support from the partners,” he said. “In fact there were no other candidates, so an election was not necessary.”

Scott added: “Being a managing partner was an interesting and stimulating experience. As a litigation lawyer, I welcomed the chance to try my hand at management. I think the firm moved ahead in my time.”
