EU streamlines rules

New rules abolishing many of the restrictions on UK lawyers who want to practise in EU countries could be introduced by the end of the year. The member states of the EU have been trying to standardise the rights of establishment rules for nearly 20 years. Last week, a draft directive came before the legal affairs committee of the European Parliament, which set a tight deadline for amendments to be tabled. Patrick Oliver, the Law Society's representative in Brussels, said he hoped that the directive would be now be approved relatively quickly.
