Atsumi gains English law nous with CC hire

Japenese firm Atsumi & Partners has poached Clifford Chance counsel Daniel Hounslow to boost its international M&A and private equity offerings in Tokyo.

Hounslow, who joined Clifford Chance’s Tokyo office in 2000 as counsel, spearheaded the magic circle firm’s Japan private equity practice. He will specialise in M&A and private equity at the Japanese firm.

“Joining Atsumi & Partners is a tremendous opportunity for me. It’s a very innovative, forward-thinking firm and it’s still the only law firm in Japan that has foreign partners,” said Hounslow.

Early last year New York finance specialist Bonnie Dixon joined Atsumi as a partner. The firm registered as a foreign law joint practice, enabling it to offer legal advice on New York as well as Japanese law. With Hounslow joining, the firm will also now be able to advise on English law.

Hounslow, who has been based in Japan for more than nine years, has acted for clients including JPMorgan, ProLogis and Deutsche Securities.

Earlier this year Clifford Chance boosted its Tokyo offering by hiring New Zealand M&A star Paul O’Regan from Chapman Tripp as its new head of corporate. O’Regan, who had been a partner with New Zealand firm Chapmans for 25 years, relocated from Wellington, New Zealand to take up the newly created post.
