£48m Charman divorce case set for appeal

The Court of Appeal is set to hear one of the UK’s largest divorce cases, Charman v Charman, after John Charman was granted leave to appeal.

In July Charman was forced to pay out £48m to his estranged wife Beverley Charman, one of the largest ever sums to be awarded in the UK divorce courts.

The Court of Appeal will hear the case in March next year.

John Charman said: “I hope that by appealing against this order I will be able to help bring some clarity, fairness and coherence into the law.”

In his judgment, High Court Judge Mr Justice Coleridge described Charman as “a huge money case. The overall assets even on the most pessimistic presentation exceed £100m”.

Beverly Charman is advised by Manches, instructing 1 Hare Court silk Martin Pointer QC.

John Charman is advised by Withers, instructing 1 King’s Bench Walk’s Barry Singleton QC.
