Skadden scoops top spot for Q1 M&A

Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom has come top of mergermarket’s preliminary European M&A league tables after advising on four of the five biggest deals in the first quarter of 2006.

The US firm acted on 13 deals worth EUR115bn. This included roles on the quarter’s biggest deal, Endesa’s EUR47bn takeover by E.ON, Arcelor’s proposed EUR19bn acquisition by Mittal Steel and Merck’s EUR14.4bn bid for Schering.

Skadden is closely followed in the mergermarket tables by Linklaters with 41 deals worth EUR104bn including acting for Suez and Arcelor.

Hengeler Mueller came in at third place advising on EUR88.7bn of deals thanks in part to an instruction from E.ON.

By deals volume Clifford Chance leads the way with 54 deals followed by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer acting on 43 transactions and Linklaters with 41.

For UK announced deals, Linklaters is in first place by deal value while DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary scoops top spot for deal volume.
