Family law specialist McDaniel & Co has boosted its reputation with the hire of ­seasoned practitioner Lyn Rutherford, one of the North East’s most prominent experts in the area, as a consultant.

Until his retirement in 2008, Rutherford was head of family law at Dickinson Dees, a team he built up over some 30 years.



Brown Rudnick has hired corporate lawyer Massimo Galli as a partner in its London office. He joins from White & Case, where he was

White & Case has appointed John Benjamin as counsel in the London IP and IT group. He was previously an associate in Eversheds’ City office.

Irwin Mitchell has added partner Alex Barnes to its property team, working out of London and Birmingham. He was previously head of tax in the real estate team at Eversheds.

Osborne Clarke has hired regeneration ­specialist Rajindh Mangat for its City real estate team. He joins from Norton Rose, where he was head of urban regeneration.

Sir Roger John Laugharne Thomas has been made president of the Queen’s Bench ­Division with effect from 3 October. He has been deputy head of criminal justice and vice-president of the Queen’s Bench Division since 2008. Thomas’s appointment follows the retirement of Sir ­Anthony May on 31 July.

South east

Furley Page Solicitors has promoted real estate lawyer Liz Brady to the partnership. She joined the firm’s commercial property team in Canterbury in 2008.


Birmingham firm Anthony Collins Solicitors has nudged its partner count over the 20 mark by making up health and social care lawyer Matthew Gregson, procurement and construction lawyer Richard Brooks and local government expert Chris Plumley.


Leeds firm Shulmans has promoted Lee Stephens (employment), Kathryn Wood ­(property), Jennifer Chambers (corporate and commercial) and Rob Lucas (commercial and TMT) to associate.

Experto Credite chief operating officer Mark Hadfield has joined Leeds firm Fairfax Solicitors as head of IT and analytics. Rob ­Sharman has also moved to the firm, becoming head of compliance. He was previously director of legal at Equidebt.

Banner Jones Solicitors has hired family lawyer Carey New from Norrie Waite & Slater for its Chesterfield office. The Sheffield team has taken on Kate Hyland, a family lawyer and ­mediator from Taylor & Emmet.

Newcastle firm Muckle has made up Adrian Hill as a partner in its property team.

Weightmans has muscled in on the Knutsford market with the hire of two lawyers in the Cheshire town. Richard Dobell joins the wills, trusts tax and probate team from Cobbetts in Manchester, while Brabners Chaffe Street lawyer Rachel Harper is the firm’s latest addition to the family team.

Newcastle, Leeds and Manchester firm Ward Hadaway has promoted nine lawyers to ­associate: Sara Acheson, Joanne Briggs, Kerri ­Kershaw, Kirsty Leonard, Julia ­Middleton, Gemma Sherbourne, Kerry Short, Neil Smith and Russell Ward.


Watson Farley & Williams in Germany has hired corporate lawyer Sebastian Baum from local firm Raupach & Wollert-Elmendorff. He joins he Hamburg office on 1 July.

Hogan Lovells has snatched José Luis Vázquez from Uría Menéndez for its Madrid finance team.

Norwegian independent Haavind has made up corporate lawyer Preben Brecke and real estate lawyer Erling Marcussen Timm. They joined the partnership on 1 June.

Jones Day has hired Sidley Austin ­investment funds lawyer Carolyn McNabb as of counsel in its Singapore office.

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has made up Antony Sassi in Hong Kong and Mark Errington in ­Singapore as insurance partners.


The Dallas office of K&L Gates as scooped real estate partner Jonetta Brooks from Locke Lord Bissell & ­Liddell.

Radiation litigators Ralph Johnson and Lynn Kerr McKay have joined King & Spalding’s energy and environmental practices as counsel in Washington DC. Both move from Blank Rome, where they were partners.

Susan Ervin has moved to Davis Polk & ­Wardwell from the Securities and Exchange Commission, where she was attorney fellow/senior adviser. The futures, commodities and derivatives lawyer joins Davis Polk as a partner.

Nixon Peabody has hired Tanya Tudor for its tax team. She joins as counsel in the San Francisco office from Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, where she was a senior tax counsel.
