In case you missed it, a row has erupted at Baker & McKenzie over… wait for it… tomato sauce. Commercial department senior associate Richard Phillips has been gagged by the firm’s PR team after a row with a secretary over a £4 dry-cleaning bill. However, in time-honoured fashion, news of the messy dispute has already leaked out to thousands of lawyers and legal market professionals via email. It reached the front page of Metro on Friday (17 June).
Phillips emailed secretary Jenny Amner on 25 May to ask for £4 to cover the cost of cleaning his trousers. “If you cd [sic] let me have the cash today, that wd be much appreciated,” he added.
Amner replied: “With reference to the email below, I must apologise for not getting back to you straight away, but due to my mother’s sudden illness, death and funeral I have had more pressing issues than your £4.”
When The Lawyer contacted Phillips he could only mutter: “I can’t talk to you about it. I’ve been asked not to answer any more questions about it.” Possibly he had a lot of work to ketchup on.
