Pannick fights MoD in race case

Blackstone Chambers’ David Pannick QC (left) has been instructed by the Commission for Racial Equality to act on a racial discrimination case against the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The commission is intervening on behalf of 81-year-old widow Diana Elias, who is bringing the claim after the MoD refused to pay her compensation for her time as a Japanese prisoner of war during World War II. Pannick will argue that, by excluding Elias from ex gratia compensation because she, her parents and grandparents were not born in the UK, the MoD is discriminating against her on the grounds of national origins.
