Pinsent Masons has boosted salaries for its newly qualified associates (NQs). City NQs will now see an additional £10,000, a rise of 19 per cent from the previous figure of £53,000 to £63,000.
NQs at the firm’s regional offices in Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester, meanwhile, will earn £40,000 during the 2007-08 term – a 14 per cent hike from the £35,000 they have hitherto received.
Those at the firm’s offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow will pocket £34,000 – a more modest increase of 6 per cent on the previous figure of £32,000.
The new pay bands took effect from 1 July and match the rates set by Addleshaw Goddard last month, which broke the symbolic £40,000 mark for junior lawyers outside London for the first time.
As reported on www.thelawyer.com (22 June), DLA Piper responded with a 19 per cent salary increase for NQ lawyers in the City to £63,000. The firm lifted regional salaries by just 4 per cent in the regions to £36,500, although junior lawyers in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham will receive a successive payrise to at least £39,000 in January next year.
Elsewhere, Denton Wilde Sapte NQs have seen their pay packets soar from £53,000 to £62,000. First-year trainees, meanwhile, have enjoyed a 20 per cent salary hike, from £30,000 to £36,000. Olswang also pays its NQs £62,000 and its first-year trainees £35,000.
