Kirkland poaches Weil Gotshal tax specialist

Kirkland & Ellis has raided the London office of US rival Weil Gotshal & Manges to hire corporate tax specialist John Baldry.

Baldry joins Kirkland as a tax partner in the firm’s London office. His practice concentrates on the taxation of mergers, acquisitions and restructurings and private equity tax structuring.

He was most recently of counsel at Weil Gotshal where he worked in the London corporate tax group. Prior to joining Weil Gotshal, he was a senior associate at Allen & Overy.

The hire is in line with the Chicago-based firm’s recent aggressive expansion campaign in London, which has seen the firm poach several partners, most notably from Shearman & Sterling, last year.

A three-person litigation and arbitration team joined Kirkland from Shearman in September last year, following the arrival of Chris Colbridge who also moved across from Shearman in July to launch the firm’s standalone litigation and arbitration practice in London.

Kirkland is due to move into expanded office space in the ‘the Gherkin’ 40-storey skyscraper at 30 St Mary Axe in May.
