Hilary Meredith was born in Knutsford, Cheshire, in 1959. She is a partner and head of the catastrophic injury department at Donns in Manchester.

What was your first job?

Holiday rep in Ibiza.

What was your first ever salary as a lawyer?

£6,000 pa.

What would you have done if you hadn't become a lawyer?

Nothing, but I would have married someone rich!

Which law could you live without?

The law of gravity – it is taking over as I get older!

What was your most embarrassing professional moment?

Being interviewed in the street on a windy day by ITN, knowing I was wearing BA paper knickers as the airline had lost my luggage – they're baggy!

Patsy and Eddy from Absolutely Fabulous for a night out with the girls.

Coronation Street.

Versace sunglasses. Yes, the sun does shine in Manchester.

Run Away Jury by John Grisham.

What is your all-time favourite record?

I don't really have one, although Enya's Out of Africa reminds me of a great summer.

What piece of advice would you give to anyone entering the profession now?

Be determined and do not assume anything.

What do you like about yourself?

My nose – it keeps my sunglasses on!

What do you hate about yourself?

The lack of time I have to spend with my daughter.
