IBA steps in to stop death by stoning in Nigeria

The International Bar Association (IBA) has offered its support to Nigerian lawyer Hawa Ibrahim, who is defending Amina Lawal, the woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery in Katsina

The IBA has also written to the Nigerian government calling for it to overturn the sentence, as it contravenes both Nigerian law and international human rights. As yet, it has not received a response on this case.

In response to a March letter sent protesting against a similar sentence handed down to Safiya Hussani in Sokoto, the government said it was powerless to act because the individual had been sentenced under state laws of Sokoto rather than national law.

Lawal is currently in hiding while she waits for her case to be appealed in the state court.
