Skadden celebrates birthday with European promotions spree

New York-headquartered Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom is the latest firm to announce it partnership promotions, adding 29 to its partnership, including two in London.

This is the most promotions London has seen in at least four years. The new London partners are corporate partner Shaun Lascelles and corporate finance partner Danny Tricot.

Although a very strong showing compared to the previous three-year average of 19, the 29 firmwide promotions for 2007 represent a slight decrease on last year, when Skadden promoted a record 30 worldwide including one in London. The new promotions take the equity partnership to 451 worldwide and to 43 in Europe.

As well as the pair in London, the Paris and Moscow office garnered one new partner each. For Europe as a whole, this represents the highest number of promotions in years.

London managing partner and head of the European practice Bruce Buck said: “These partner promotions reflect our home-grown talent. All four of them are exceptional lawyers.”

Three of the four European promotions are in the corporate department. By practice area firmwide, keeping with tradition at Skadden, corporate scored the most new partners, with ten. Litigation did well, with six.

Asia also got a bumper crop of promotions, with three spread across Beijing, Hong Kong and Tokyo. The other 22 promotions were US-based, the firm’s New York headquarters gaining the most new partners of any office, with eight. But Washington DC followed quickly behind, with seven.

Skadden is unusual among US firms in announcing its promotions in April. Although the beginning of the fiscal year is the favoured time for UK firms to reveal their new partners, US firms typically choose the end of the calendar year.

But in a nod to tradition, Skadden celebrates its 1 April birthday with promotions. The firm is now 59 years old.
