Thames Valley firm Morgan Cole has cooked up a win for respected chef Raymond Blanc against a group of Caribbean cybersquatters.
The dispute came about after a company based in the Bahamas registered the domain name www.raymondblanc.com and used it to advertise products that had nothing to do with the famous chef.
Morgan Cole resolved the claim at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), which ruled that Caribbean Online International Limited was using Raymond Blanc’s reputation “to direct internet users to an unconnected commercial website for commercial gain”.
Raymond Blanc said: “I am relieved that this issue is now resolved. I have worked hard to build my reputation over the years. These cybersquatters had nothing to do with me and had no permission to use my name.”
Similar WIPO decisions have favoured other celebrities including actress Julia Roberts, and author Michael Crichton.
