HIV victim lands campaigning award

An HIV-positive Swazi woman has won the Law and Campaigning Award at the Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression awards. Siphiwe Hlophe, co-founder of Swaziland Aids charity ‘Swazis for Positive Living’, won the award for the organisation’s work fighting gender discrimination related to HIV and Aids and helping other HIV and Aids victims. The other shortlisted nominees were Ethiopian human rights lawyer Yalemzewd Bekele; Abdul Rahman al Lahem, a Saudi Arabian lawyer who has challenged the operation of sharia law in Saudi; and the director of the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society Stanislav Dmitrievsky.
