Allen & Overy ace to join Milbank ‘godfather’ of outsourcing deals

Allen & Overy’s star outsourcing partner Laurence Jacobs is joining the London office of US firm Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy.

The move will team Jacobs with Milbank’s legendary New York partner John Halvey, considered by many to be the godfather of outsourcing transactions.

“The strategy for us is that if there’s a business that we’re strong in, we like to grow it globally,” said Phillip Fletcher, the co-ordinating partner of Milbank’s European offices.

Milbank has taken an age to recruit in London, despite a market-leading technology and outsourcing practice in the US. After a number of failed attempts to fill its London IT void, Milbank has its hands on someone who should fit in. Jacobs was at school with London-based tax partner Russell Jacobs and spent his early years at Clifford Chance with IP partner David Perkins.

Milbank will now look to build a team around Jacobs. Restrictive covenants permitting, he will expect to bring work with him.

Jacobs leaves Allen & Overy 12 years after he joined from Clifford Chance. He will start at Milbank at the end of September, as his work on the National Programme for IT in the NHS winds down.

An Allen & Overy spokesperson said: “Laur-ence has made a significant contribution to the market-leading position of Allen & Overy’s TMT practice. Looking forward, we will continue to build upon our position as market leader.”
