WilmerHale is set to close its Oxford office with managing partner Joe Pillman transferring to London.
The move follows the firm’s decision to close its Munich office in December, when the two partners and six associates set up their own boutique M Law Group.
WilmerHale’s joint managing partner Bill Perlstein told The Lawyer: “Munich was quite small, with six or seven lawyers. Our general approach is that where we are going to be, we want to be sizeable and deep. Our focus is on the three main offices we have of today.”
Those offices are London, Berlin and Brussels. The firm has about 55 lawyers in London, 40 in Berlin and a strong antitrust team in Brussels.
The Washington DC-based firm inherited the Oxford office after the merger of Wilmer Cutler & Pickering and Hale and Dorr. Oxford was part of Hale and Dorr’s European joint venture with dissolved West Coast firm Brobeck Phlegher & Harrison.
Pillman is one of two European executive committee members and brings his corporate practice, which focuses on venture capital and start-ups, to London.
