Bingham seals second Tokyo merger

US firm Bingham McCutchen has announced its merger with Tokyo based insolvency firm New Tokyo International Law Office.

The combined firm will ramp up Bingham’s presence in Asia, increasing the number of Japanese lawyers in the firm’s Tokyo office to 50.

The merger comes after Bingham announced its merger with another Tokyo firm, Sakai & Mimura, in January this year.

Bingham’s chairman Jay Zimmerman said: “We’re creating a client-driven leading restructuring, financial services and corporate firm with solid resources in Japan, further expanding Bingham’s global reach.”

New Tokyo International Law Office is a cross-border restructuring and insolvency firm with 22 lawyers.

Zimmerman said: “The firm is well positioned to accommodate clients based in Japan and those conducting business there.”
