Irvine takes over running of the HRA

The Lord Chancellor, Lord Irvine has taken over responsibility for a raft of legislation from the Government, including the Human Rights Act (HRA).

A third ministerial post has been created to handle the Lord Chancellor’s Department’s additional work. The ministers involved are Baroness Scotland, Rosie Winterton and Michael Wills. The department was due to announce the remits of the ministers on Friday afternoon (15 June) as The Lawyer went to press.
The department has taken over from the Home Office the burden of ensuring that the HRA and data protection and freedom of information legislation is implemented.
Lord Irvine is also taking on the day-to-day responsibilities for relations with the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, both Crown dependencies with their own legislative assemblies.
