The Law Society is setting up a dedicated pro bono telephone helpline for the victims of the London bombings and their families.
Several law firms have offered to help staff the line, which will offer free legal advice to those injured in the attacks as well as the families of those killed.
The new Law Society president, Kevin Martin, said the line will offer help with issues such as death certificates, wills, inquests and compensation claims.
The initiative was welcomed by a range of organisations including the Bar Council, which said it was standing by to play its part through the Bar Pro Bono Unit and the Free Representation Unit. The Solicitors’ Pro Bono Group is also helping by assisting the Law Society to draw up a list of firms with the appropriate expertise.
The line will be active from today (Monday 18 July) until 31 August 2005, and the number is 0800 731 4796.
