West Coast firm Cooley Godward is opening an office in Washington DC following a raid on DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary. The raid included the hire of the former managing partner of Gray Cary’s DC office.
As first revealed on www.thelawyer.com (12 July), partners Margaret Kavalaris, Michael Marinelli and Tami Howie join from DLA Piper’s DC office. They will form the core of Cooley Godward’s new DC office. It is the firm’s second office on the East Coast after launching its 60-lawyer practice in Reston, Virginia, in 1999.
Kavalaris, a general corporate finance and securities practice specialist, served as the managing partner of Gray Cary’s DC office from 2003 until the DLA Piper merger earlier this year. She also served on the firm’s executive committee from 1996 until 2004.
The DC office is expected to focus on corporate, technology, banking, IP, litigation and international trade regulation.
Marinelli specialises in the federal regulation of international trade, while Howie focuses her practice on corporate and securities law.
They will be supported by a number of lawyers who are due to move across from the Reston office.
