McDermott Will & Emery has scooped Hammonds’ final departing Brussels partner José Rivas along with the firm’s UK competition head Alasdair Bell.
Rivas joins the US firm’s European competition group and will co-head the team alongside US-qualified partner Scott Megregian. Rivas will also sit on McDermott’s management committee.
The announcement comes a week after Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw hired trade law specialist Edward Borovikov, who resigned from Hammonds together with Rivas and Brussels office head Konstantinos Adamantopoulos in the summer.
Negotiations to keep the trio with Hammonds failed, although Adamantopoulos did agree to stay with the firm.
Meanwhile Bell is to head up McDermott’s sports law group from London. He joined Hammonds in 2004 from Olswang.
His departure is a further loss for the firm’s sports law team, which earlier this year saw department head Jonathan Taylor leave for Bird & Bird and partner Andy Korman defected to Couchman Harrington.
