The Midlands

The Midlands’ legal community is joining forces with lobbying group Birmingham Forward to push for its own branch of the High Court. Despite being England’s second-largest city and having a highly competitive legal market, many Midlands cases, particularly public and administrative law cases, are heard in London.

Commercial and other civil cases heard in the Midlands are usually determined by senior circuit judges sitting in the High Court, whereas a Midlands High Court will mean better access to justice for local residents and businesses and a more efficient system.

The Midlands has also found itself at the forefront of the domestic market for Islamic finance. Business leaders in the Midlands have been looking at ways in which they can work with London to develop its position as a major international centre for Islamic finance.
