Hill Dickinson boosts marine

Hill Dickinson is doubling its London marine department with the appointment of two yachting partners from Berrymans Lace Mawer.

The appointment of Ken Thwaites and Tony Allen, who are joined by assistant solicitor Samantha Levin, will leave Berrymans' marine and transit division with only one partner.

However, Stuart Armstrong, head of marine and transit at Berrymans, says the division still has eight members, including three solicitors and an associate.

He says: “The division is starting to go in a different direction. The yachting market isn't as large as the big shipping area.”

But he adds: “No-one likes to see people leave,” although he says that he has no intention of replacing the three who left.

Thwaites, Allen and Levin are joining Hill Dickinson's two other London-based partners in the marine department, which also employs an assistant solicitor.

John Hulmes, head of marine at Hill Dickinson, says the appointments are a precursor to the appointment in the near future of a high profile shipping team.

However, he was unavailable for further comment.

Armstrong says Berrymans has just added to its division by appointing a master mariner, which he describes as a solicitor who is also a seaman qualified to captain level.>
