The most pressing issue concerning some law firms, apparently, is not the possible impact of the Legal Services Bill or how to respond to further fallout from the credit crunch.

No. If there’s anything guaranteed to spark intense internal debate, it’s the subject of the office Christmas party.

For some of the partners at Ashurst it can be a painful experience. They consequently try to do anything to keep a low profile.

But apparently some of their colleagues welcome any excuse to dust down the vicar or French maid outfit.

Last year’s party was a hoot, with one partner turning up in a perfectly fitting sailor outfit, to the peals of joy from the litigation department, who apparently like nothing better than dressing up.

Real estate lawyers, on the other hand, are more conservative in their attire.

“You don’t need to dress up to be scandalous,” one partner confessed, with a crafty wink.
