Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker has poached corporate specialist Basil Hwang from O’Melveny & Myers, continuing its expansion of the Hong Kong corporate team.

Hwang joins Paul Hastings as a partner in the corporate group from O’Melveny & Myers’ Hong Kong office where he was a counsel. Hwang specialises on M&A, private equity and securities offerings.

Paul Hastings’ Hong Kong office chair Neil Torpey told The Lawyer: “The market out here and our practice out here is very busy and we are trying to expand the team as much and as quickly as possible with suitably talented people.”

Paul Hastings’ Hong Kong office has seen a significant boost in numbers during the past year, which included inheriting a private equity team from Perkins Coie’s defunct Asian base.

Earlier this year the firm raided fellow US firms for talent, poaching leveraged finance specialists Brett King and Susan Thom from Millbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy. They joined as partner and senior associate respectively.

Shearman & Sterling’s Singapore office was also raided for corporate partner Alex Regan.
