Tulkinghorn popped along to the Oval last week, the scene of many historic cricketing moments, such as Michael Vaughan finally lifting the Ashes or DLA Piper sports lawyer Mark Gay going in to bat for Pakistan (or at least its captain Inzamam ul-Haq over the ball-tampering affair.

But unfortunately for Tulkinghorn, there was not a bat or ball in sight on this occasion.

Instead, the great and good of the legal profession were speaking about strategic management techniques, which was much more thrilling than an afternoon watching Surrey in the County Championship… honest.

Tulkinghorn’s favourite moment of the day was Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer senior partner Konstantin Mettenheimer’s show and tell. Citing Green & Black’s chocolate as a model of branding and pricing, Konstantin proceeded to share a big bar of organic ginger-flavoured chocolate with the delegates.

Oh, the delight. “Tastes like posh Crunchie!” exclaimed one delegate.
