College of Law chief Nigel Savage has thrown down the gauntlet. The college is demonstrating its commitment to diversity in the legal profession by handing over £1.25m to a scheme to attract non-private-school-educated students into the law and is asking the profession to do the same.

As we report today, the college has teamed up with social mobility the Sutton Trust, which is contributing an additional £250,000 to ‘Pathways to Law’ a pioneering project that will mentor 15 and 16-year-old state school pupils whose families have not attended university through A-Levels and degree.

Diversity is supposedly on every major law firm’s agenda. So we’ll just await with interest whether any of them follow the College of Law’s lead.
