Day tipped as next SJ Berwin chief

Rob Day has emerged as the early favourite to take over from departing Ralph Cohen as managing partner at SJ Berwin.

Corporate partner Day is on the strategy committee at the City firm and is understood to be among a small cabal of partners leading the ongoing merger talks with US firm Proskauer Rose. He also enjoyed a stint as interim managing partner during Cohen’s short sabbatical last year.

One SJ Berwin partner commented: “Rob would be a unifying influence. He’s respected for his honesty and integrity.

“Whether we go one way or the other with the merger, we need someone like him.”

Other names mentioned in connection with the job include current corporate and litigation chiefs Steve Davis and Craig Pollack. With doubts around whether either would stand, though, Day looks to be in poll position.

Last week Cohen announced his decision to stand down and return to full-time fee-earning after eight years at the helm.

He is handing over the position 18 months before his term is due to finish.

Cohen said he had “been thinking about it for some time”, adding that “this felt like the right time”.

The firm will decide on the form of the election next month, with a replacement expected to be in place later in the autumn.
