Varun Gupta, who is US-qualified, is a choice addition to A&O’s 28-lawyer Russian offering, which firm managing partner David Morley highlighted was an area for focus in 2007 (The Lawyer, 18 December 2006).
Capital markets particularly was an area that Morley singled out for growth. Latham has a well-respected capital markets practice in Russia and Gupta had acted on some of Latham’s largest deals of late, including the London £180.69m listing of Russian technology group Sitronics, London’s largest technology IPO of the last five years.
A&O is hoping to capitalise on the wave of similar IPOs of Russian companies to hit London this year.
The firm’s Russia head Tony Humphrey said Gupta’s hire “highlights the growing demand we’re experiencing from our clients for top-quality legal advice in what is a strategically important emerging market”.
